Who Gets the Dog and Godfather II
This was an interesting double feature. I broke off of my usual Sunday Criterion 24-7 because I got up a little late and wasn't into what was showing (a documentary about a religious group in Lebanon, which was probably good but not right for my brain at the time).
Instead I watched a very silly rom-com kind of movie with Alicia Silverstone and Ryan Kwanten about a custody battle over a dog. It made me legitimately laugh a couple of times, unexpectedly. It was better than expected (though my expectations were not super high).
I followed it up with Godfather II, naturally. What incredible lighting this movie has. It made me curious to see Megalopolis. I might go. I was thinking about what makes mafia stories so appealing to so many people, even though so few can directly relate. Watching G2, I thought maybe it is about the inheritance of generational trauma. Parents can pass on so many flaws and issues that children have to cope with and then pass on sometimes the same, sometimes different issues to the next generation. Sometimes it's also generational wealth. We can't relate to that, but I'm sure the Coppolas can.
