Black Bag
More movies need to be like "Black Bag," the newest Steven Soderbergh movie. The spy thriller is smart, exciting, does not treat its audience like idiots - but also well crafted enough to never be confusing - only suspenseful. It clocks in at a tight 90-ish minutes and uses each of those minutes skillfully. It has a sort of effervescence to it, simmering along with tension and doubt but also charm. Cate Blanchett is always a joy to watch, and everyone else is great too - Michael Fassbender is her spy husband tasked with uncovering whether she's a traitor. It's like "True Lies," but actually good ("True Lies" is one of my all-time most hated movies). Anyway, it was so fun to see a new movie that was good, not bloated with CGI, obvious exposition, convoluted plots or afterschool special morality. It's streaming on Peacock and worth the price of admission.
