Art College 1994

The gorgeous 2023 animated movie "Art College 1994" hit me just right - although they're art school students in China, I too remember being emo with my college friends when we found out Kurt Cobain had died. But then there's extra chitchat about how Westerners look old for their age and Cobain seemed 40 instead of 27. It's distinctly Chinese while feeling very relatable. I love a slice of life movie that feels like eavesdropping, and this delivers. It's really funny in parts and accurate to the endless profundities college kids like to drop over ramen in the dorm. The art, unsurprisingly, is a constant source of delight and the deep thoughts even come around and make you think - like, there's a lengthy discussion of whether Duchamp's urinal is art, then later a scene of drunk friends in a men's room surrounded by urinals and yeah, you can't help but be provoked into thinking. It's a great movie for more than just my personal nostalgia reasons.

Messy dorm room: relatable

Lots of skillful "beauty in the ordinary" moments

Sometimes it's the extraordinary kind of beautiful
