The Freshman (1925)
Harold Lloyd was a McCarthy supporter, the MAGA of his day. But so much time has passed that it's not hard to separate the art of the 100-year-old "The Freshman" from the artist, even though it wouldn't be a movie without him. Lloyd was a master of physical comedy, and some of the scenes are freshly, really funny. Lloyd plays a clueless college freshman whom his classmates make the butt of every joke. He accidentally treats everyone in school to an ice cream (it's fun to watch the growing horror on his face as the parade of treat-ees gets larger). He tries to join the football team and becomes a tackling dummy. He hosts a big school dance in an unfinished suit,.and the scenes of the tailor working frantically between dances as the suit starts to fall to pieces is really funny. He does a funny little dance every time he shakes someone's hand, in imitation of a movie star he thinks is cool. Also there is a ton of sweater wearing and I do like sweaters. I think Harold Lloyd would be successful today. Sometimes he reminded me of Adam Sandler, but maybe that's because Harold's freshman is also relegated to water boy on the football team (before, of course, helping win the big game).
