Automorphosis
Wow, a "quirky subculture" documentary I can actually relate to! In high school, my best friend decided that her old tan Buick Skylark did not adequately express her personality. She bought spray paint in many colors and we went to town on it. She drove it for a couple of years until she had to paint over it to sell it. It was such a trip driving around in it with her. Anyway, "Automorphosis" is a fun documentary by Harrod Blank, son of legendary documentarian Les (I'm pretty sure some of his documentaries are also in this blog). It is all about people with art cars, which is not what Anne and I called her car (actually it was "the Beast." Some of them are truly amazing. It's funny thinking of art cars as a subculture - in most cases, I would say, it isn't. It's very individualistic, not a group thing, although apparently there are art car parades now in some cities. So I guess it has become a thing, maybe, in some places. Back in the day, she used to get pulled over constantly by the cops and one tried citing her because "the color of the car did not match the registration." Which was complete nonsense! You could still see the base color. They just hated seeing something different. This type of issue is not mentioned in the movie, although one guy says he was fired because of his car, and maybe he is right.
This documentary is super, super fun and and many of the cars are beautiful, many others made me laugh out loud, and the people are all fascinating. 10/10 loved it.
