Prefab Story

Věra Chytilová is so great. "Daisies" is a wild masterpiece, but "Prefab Story" is also so wonderful. (It is aka "Panelstory or Birth of a Community.") It has fewer surreal touches than "Daisies," but a sharp an eye for ridiculousness, especially in the messy bureaucracy in which she lived.

Throughout the movie, which follows various residents of the community being built, there's constant construction, muddy messes, squalling babies, spatting couples, medical crises. Children are agents of chaos and old people are, too. There's such indescribable wonder about how she cuts from topographical maps to the construction mess outside the apartment window, about how sharply all the intertwined stories of the apartment dwellers are observed. It is all about building community. In a more interesting way than that sounds, probably. This movie doesn't even have a Wikipedia entry??? It's so good.

Věra Chytilová has an artist's eye and even her scenes set in squallor and chaos are beautiful.

The constant struggle of trying to maintain dignity in a messy world.
The construction is constant and prominent through the whole movie.

Rude of her to film a scene from my childhood
Here there's an overlay of yellow speckles inspired by welding sparks. Welding holds it all together, after all.
